Trump intends to appoint billionaire John Phelan as the Navy’s next commander.
Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday night, saying, “John will be a tremendous force for our Naval Servicemembers, and a steadfast leader in advancing my America First vision.” “He will prioritize the U.S. Navy’s business over all else.”
Phelan is the founder and chairman of the Florida-based private investment company Rugger Management LLC. He served as managing partner of the private equity firm MSD Capital. Phelan never served in the armed forces.
The businessman donates to several GOP-aligned committees including the Trump campaign. According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) reports, he gave $834,600 to Trump 47, his joint fundraising committee, in April. According to FEC records, Phelan also made donations to several Republican state party affiliates during the 2024 election cycle.
Trump declared that his track record of accomplishments “speaks for itself – A true Champion of American Enterprise and Ingenuity.” “John has unrivaled leadership and intelligence.”
Trump was invited to a lavish fundraiser in Aspen, Colorado, in August by Phelan and his wife, Amy. The Senate will need to confirm the appointment. Next year, the chamber will be controlled by the Republican Party.
“His extraordinary knowledge and expertise will improve the lives of the courageous Americans who serve our country. For our nation and our Navy, John will provide tangible outcomes. I’m excited to collaborate with him,” Trump added.
