The longest-living president in American history, Jimmy Carter, attributed his longevity in part to his marriage to Rosalynn Carter, the ideal spouse.
James Earl Carter, Jr., was the 39th president of the United States. On December 29, 2024, Carter passed away at the age of 100. President Joe Biden has designated Thursday, January 9, as a day of mourning, and his funeral will take place in Washington, D.C.
Rosalynn Carter, Carter’s wife, passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96. After 77 years of marriage, the couple had four kids, 22 grandkids, and great-grandchildren.
How did the Carters manage to live such a long and contented life? One another.
Carter said, “I think the best explanation for that is to marry the best spouse: someone who will take care of you and engage and do things to challenge you and keep you alive and interested in life,” to a People Magazine question about what he believes contributes to a long, happy life.
According to him, the previous president and first lady actually weren’t too concerned with longevity; instead, they devoted the majority of their time to finding ways to give back to their community and support one another.
Mr. Carter told The Washington Post that they fell in love in Plains, Georgia, his hometown. According to his interview with The Post, he invited Rosalynn out to the movies after they met at Plains United Methodist Church, and the next morning he informed his mother that he was getting married to her.
Rolling Stone claims that Rosalynn attended his Cabinet sessions when he was president.
Additionally, in 1982, the couple established The Carter Center, a nongovernmental organization dedicated to enhancing lives. Together with Habitat for Humanity, the institution has constructed thousands of homes in more than ten countries.
Carter told Rolling Stone, “What Rosalynn and I wanted to do was fill voids and solve issues that others weren’t able or willing to do.”
Tennis, downhill skiing, and birdwatching were among the hobbies the Carters liked later in life. “Rosa and I have seen about 1,300 different species of bird,” he claimed in an interview with People.
The couple returned to their hometown after his presidency and purchased a modest $167,000 house.
He went on to say, “Now, when we have a quiet moment, like a birthday or something, we like to stay at home, just by ourselves, and enjoy a quiet day in our own house without any visitors and with minimal phone calls and emails coming in.”
They became the longest-married first couple in July 2023 when they celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary at their Georgia home.
