Black Friday 2024: When is it?
Black Friday is a shopping holiday that falls on Friday, November 29. This year, Black Friday falls on Thursday, November 28, the day following Thanksgiving.
Black Friday: What is it?
According to a previous USA TODAY article, the day is thought to have received the moniker “Black Friday” in the 1950s when Philadelphia police used it to characterize the mayhem they saw as a result of suburban consumers overrunning the city. It is now one of the largest shopping and sales occasions of the year.
By 1961, the name had become popular in Philadelphia, but it wasn’t until the late 1980s that retailers took advantage of the occasion to reinterpret the day as something more positive. They came up with the comparison of stores that were “in the red” (having a financial deficit) to those that were “in the black” (making money) after the day after Thanksgiving.

When will the 2024 Black Friday deals begin?
Retailers started introducing “Black Friday” sales earlier and extending their duration in response to consumers’ growing inclination for internet buying, which allowed them more time to profit. As early as the beginning of November, a number of stores started lowering their prices, including Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart, Staples, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and Target. Some of the best offers, meanwhile, are typically saved until Cyber Monday or the day before.

Beginning on Thursday, November 21, and ending on Friday, November 29, is Amazon’s Black Friday Week.
