Rory Callum Sykes passes away

According to his family, one of the casualties of the tragic wildfires in Los Angeles is an Australian guy who was once an inspirational figure as a child.

Rory Callum Sykes, 32, passed away at his family’s home in Malibu, California, on Wednesday, January 8. His mother, Shelley Sykes, posted on X that her son had died. As a youngster, he had been in the media discussing living with impairments, including cerebral palsy, and he even served as a motivational speaker for a while.

Shelley posted on Thursday, January 9, “It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of my beautiful son @Rorysykes to the Malibu fires yesterday.” She also expressed her “total heartbreak” over her “wonderful son.”

Before recently moving to the United States, Rory, who was born in Britain and was blind, according to his mother, lived in Sydney, Australia, according to Australian news station 9 News.

According to his mother’s post on X, he passed away while residing in a cottage on the family’s 17-acre Malibu home.

The water was turned off, so I was unable to use a hose to extinguish the cinders on his roof. Shelley said, “Even the fifty courageous firefighters were without water for the entire day.”

(In response to criticism regarding water shortage concerns, L.A. officials have stated that “tremendous demand” caused some water tanks to run empty and that there was a brief dip in water pressure.)

His mother, who also authored a book about him, noted that Rory “overcame so much with surgeries and therapies to regain his sight and to be able to learn to walk” before he passed away and was keen to see the world “despite the pain.”

She came to the conclusion that her late son would be greatly missed.
