The 82nd annual Golden Globes 2025 kicked off awards season with a bang, from red-carpet attire to the night’s major prizes.
At the Golden Globes on Sunday night, Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist emerged victorious, each picture winning many accolades. Additionally, Shōgun and Hacks won first place in their respective TV categories.
Winners, Demi Moore, Adrien Brody, Fernanda Torres, and Sebastian Stan gave a number of heartfelt acceptance speeches during the awards ceremony, some of which focused on issues that were prominent in their films.
At the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, Nikki Glaser hosted the event for the first time and made lighthearted fun of a number of the films and nominees that evening. The comedian also wore a number of outfits, one of which featured elements reminiscent of the Golden Globe-nominated movies Conclave and Wicked.
The film’s lead Karla Sofía Gascón gave a stirring speech to end the evening after Emilia Pérez won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.
As the first transgender woman to receive a Golden Globe nomination for a main role in a motion picture, Gascón opened with the poignant and inspirational words, “The light always wins over darkness.”
She continued by praising the trans community’s tenacity, adding, “You can beat us up and put us in jail, but you can never take away our soul, our existence, or our identity. I would like you to “raise your voice… and say, ‘I am who I am, not who you want.'”

Adrien Brody’s performance in The Brutalist earned him the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture—Drama award. With an interval, the picture runs for three hours and thirty-five minutes. It also won Best Motion Picture—Drama.
Brody plays an architect who emigrates to the US from post-World War II Europe.
“My mother is a Hungarian refugee, so I definitely have an intimate understanding of the immigrant experience,” Brody said to Yahoo Entertainment. “With hopes and dreams, my mother and my grandparents fled Budapest in 1956 and arrived in America.”
He also praised his father in his acceptance speech.
“You never fail to support me, my goodness. I frequently give my mother credit for influencing me as an artist, but tonight, Dad, you are the cornerstone of our family, and all the love I received returns to you,” he added.
According to Brody, The Brutalist is fundamentally a “story about human capacity for creation.” He also acknowledged his fellow finalists.
Fernanda Torres, a Brazilian actress who starred in I’m Still Here, dedicated her Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture—Drama win to her mother, who was a nominee at the Golden Globes.
When Torres added, “I want to dedicate [the award] to my mother,” she was alluding to Fernanda Montenegro, who received a nomination for her performance in the 1998 movie Central Station. “You have no idea, she was here 25 years ago.”
This, she continued, is “proof that art can endure through life, even in difficult moments.”
According to the Golden Globes, Torres was the second Brazilian actress to receive a Golden Globe nomination, while her mother received the first.
