FBI Director Nominee Kash Patel

At his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kash Patel, the FBI director nominated by President Trump, provided testimony.

It’s possible that Patel’s devotion to Trump helped secure his nomination.

Throughout Donald Trump’s four years in administration, Kash Patel showed unwavering loyalty by supporting him in the dark days following the FBI’s 2022 search of the president’s Florida resort.

Kash Patel has rarely been accused of understating his admiration for President Trump, so to suggest that he does so would be an understatement.

Mr. Patel’s relationship with the president, who rewarded his unwavering loyalty and tenacity with a string of high-level national security and defense positions during Mr. Trump’s first term, is largely responsible for his rapid rise from unknown Republican congressional aide to a nominee for F.B.I. director in less than ten years.

Even though Mr. Trump recently joked that he did not meet his central casting picture of an F.B.I. director, Mr. Patel, 44, appears to have been promoted from a supporting position to a leading one due to his unwavering loyalty during Mr. Trump’s rocky four years out of office.

Mr. Trump described Mr. Patel as a “brilliant lawyer” and a “fighter for America First” when he nominated him.

At a conservative political convention last year, Mr. Patel gave the following description of Mr. Trump: “God has blessed us with Donald Trump as our leader, our juggernaut of justice, and our steadfast fighter in the arena.”

In order to prove himself to Mr. Trump, Mr. Patel played the outside game. He published a three-volume children’s series in which he depicted Mr. Trump as a crowned monarch; he wrote a now-infamous book in which he singled out 60 perceived enemies for unspecified retribution; he made over 1,000 media appearances (and attended dozens of in-person events) in which he attacked Mr. Trump’s opponents; and he served as a high-volume surrogate on the 2024 campaign trail.

Mr. Patel, who was born on Long Island, also played the inside game. He supported Mr. Trump during the dark days following the FBI’s raid of the president’s Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, in the summer of 2022, gave him advice on national security, and made the most of his face time with Mr. Trump and his courtiers in West Palm Beach throughout the transition.
